4 Ways to Make this Holiday Season Special

4 Ways to Make this Holiday Season Special

Dec. 22nd, 2020

Now that Christmas and New Year’s is upon us, the holiday season is officially here! You’re probably going to be spending time with your loved ones and embracing your family’s age-old traditions.

It's important now more than ever to cherish the memories that will last a life time. You might be wondering how you can make the Christmas season a little more special for your family and the community this year.

Here are some ideas to help you make this year memorable!

Call Your Loved Ones who are Far Away

There may be some family members or friends you haven’t spoken to in a while but would like to reconnect with this holiday season.

One way you can make the holidays special is by calling your loved ones who can’t come spend Christmas with you this year. Giving them a call shows them that you care and that you’re interested in how they’ve been doing.

Calling someone is also more personal than sending a text or an email. When you talk on the phone, you’re giving someone your undivided attention.

If you both are able to, a video call may also make your conversation more interactive, fun, and meaningful!

Volunteer

While many volunteer opportunities may have adapted or changed due to the pandemic, that doesn’t mean you can’t still find ways to give back to the community this holiday season.

Think about volunteering in your local area to make this holiday season special for someone else. Whether that’s helping your local church collect donations or picking up gifts to give to people in need, there are many ways you can reach out to those who need it in your community.

Organizations that have volunteer opportunities include:

  • Nonprofits
  • Food pantries
  • Nursing Homes
  • Homeless Shelters
  • Churches

You can also volunteer to help your neighbors if you can’t find any formal opportunities. Ask a senior if you can shovel their driveway, or maybe volunteer to watch someone’s dog if they want to spend their time focusing on their family for a day.

Volunteering this year can help you give back and create memories that will last for the rest of your life. Give a little bit of your time this season to help someone else!

Plan Family Activities

During the holiday season, many people are on Christmas break or choose to take time off to be with their immediate families. Plan some fun activities with your loved ones to make this holiday season special!

Here are a few family activities you and your family can do:

  • Fun seasonal crafts. If your family is on the artistic side, then they might enjoy doing crafts. Think about making ornaments, drawing Christmas pictures, using your art skills in festive coloring books, or cutting unique snowflakes. This is a fun way to entertain everyone in the family, and is a great idea if you have small children who like art!
  • Plan a Karaoke or Dance Night. One fun way for your family to enjoy your favorite holiday music is by having a karaoke and dance night. Make a playlist of everybody’s favorite Christmas songs and create memories with your loved ones that you’ll talk about for years to come.
  • Have the kids help make dessert. Another fun way to keep your family active during the holidays is by asking your kids to make part of your holiday dessert. Depending on their age will be the level that they can help, but you can ask them to mix cookie dough for Santa or help out with decorating a cake.
  • Plan a holiday scavenger hunt. Another fun family activity to make this Christmas special is by planning a scavenger hunt around the house. You can hide candy and treats from Santa’s elves that your family members will have to find.

Give everyone a thoughtful handmade gift

Another way you can make this Christmas season memorable is by giving everyone a thoughtful gift this year – and not just something you buy at the store.

If you’re able to, create handmade gifts that you can give your loved ones before the holidays are over. Whether that’s a photo album of memories, homemade cards, a scarf you knit, or some cookies, a handmade gift will make the holidays special for your loved ones this year.

You can surprise your loved ones on Christmas, or wait until the perfect moment leave to give them their unique gift.

A handmade gift will likely be remembered by your family members for years to come. Consider making something special for everyone this holiday season!
