Chaley Barlow Graduates from the Student Success Program

Jul. 24th, 2024

The Student Success Program is dedicated to helping affiliated employees of Saber Healthcare Group achieve their dream role in the nursing field.

Meet Chaley Barlow, the Director of Nursing at Farmville Health and Rehab. She is currently enrolled in a program where she is earning a degree funded by the Student Success Program, and she shares her incredible journey of how she became the amazing nurse that she is today!

“I believe that in nursing and life, you continuously learn. After 30 years of being a nurse, I think continuing education is key to success in any building or job that you do. It doesn’t matter what age you are, stick to your dreams.”

Tell us about yourself

“I was a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for sixteen years. Throughout the 14 years that I have been a nurse, I always desired to become a Director of Nursing because I wanted to make a difference. I have four beautiful boys and I found a way through this program to juggle my family life and RN school to achieve my dream.”

Tell us about your background in your career

“I graduated in 2008 with my LPN degree. I worked hard as a floor nurse for a year, and then I was promoted to a management position. Once I became a manager, I knew immediately that this was the field where I wanted to be. I became a wound care nurse because I wanted to have diverse experiences where I could grow and learn to provide the best care for my patients. I received a lot of training, and eventually, I was able to become an Assistant Director of Nursing. I enrolled in school and I began my journey to learn how to become a better manager. I believe that organization structure and having good leaders is the foundation of a good facility, and I strived to reach my goal of becoming a Director of Nursing.”

How did you learn about the Student Success Program?

“I learned about the Student Success Program through a work e-mail. I forwarded it on to my staff and then I decided to apply for it myself. I always wanted to go back to school, but I was unsure of how I could balance my work and classes. Then I decided that if I was promoting this to my staff, I needed to do it myself to show them it was possible.”

Tell us about the scholarship that you earned

“The scholarship I earned was an easy application to get through. Saber streamlined the process and made it accessible for me to apply. I followed the steps and within a couple of weeks, I was accepted. They paid for my full Bachelor’s and I did not pay anything out of pocket.”

What tools did the Student Success Program give you to be successful?

“Everything! They have given me writing programs to help improve my essays and written work. I also receive email reminders to submit assignments and other tasks for class. There were success tools when we logged into the Blackboard account. I was in school before but never online, which was different.”

What is your favorite part about working for Farmville?

“The leadership team that I work with. I believe that you are only as good as the leader. I love working with people that I can trust and ask for help because they will be there no matter what. We have cookouts once a month and do everything here. An environment like Farmville’s where we all enjoy what we do is the best place to work.”

If someone aspired to join the healthcare field, what advice would you give them?

“Come join us, but let me know the reason. I think you must do nursing for the right reason. I truly feel that nursing is my passion and that I always wanted to help seniors. I see people daily who serve our country, and it is time for me to care for them. As long as your purpose is driven by passion and purpose, this field will truly be for you.”

Name one positive experience you’ve had since joining the team at Farmville

“My most positive experiences are when residents who are hesitant to come here find out that they love it! Many of them will leave with a smile on their face and give us hugs. They are always excited when their journey was positive and that they have the tools to return home. There is no better feeling than seeing that we gave someone great care.”
