Here are 12 facts about your teeth that you may have not known!

  1. The average adult has 32 teeth once their teeth come in. Most people will get their adult teeth between the ages of 12-14.1
  2. Your tooth enamel on the surface of the tooth is the hardest part of your body.2
  3. Teeth usually cannot heal themselves. When they do, it is usually a small crack or minimal damage, and they are healed through a process called remineralization.3
  4. Flossing may extend your life expectancy by up to 6 years because it reduces the chances of infectious diseases and heart attacks.4
  5. There are 6 billion bacteria in a human’s mouth. Some of this is good bacteria that helps to maintain your oral health.5
  6. Another interesting fact about teeth is 70% of cases where teeth are lost are due to gum disease.6
  7. Smoking can damage your teeth. Smoking can affect the body’s immune system, and many smokers are prone to gum disease because their body can’t adequately fight off the bacteria.7
  8. Some people are more at risk for cavities than others. Risk factors include improper oral hygiene, a lack of fluoride, sugary food and drinks, acid reflux, eating disorders, and a dry mouth.7
  9. Most people brush their teeth for 45 seconds. However, the American Dental Association recommends that you brush for 2 minutes, twice a day.8
  10. Your teeth are unique. Just like fingerprints, no one has the same set of teeth.9
  11. Your teeth will start to grow before you are born. The teeth will begin to grow when you are in the womb, and they will fully start to come through between 6-12 months old.10
  12. Only 2/3 of your tooth’s length is visible, and the other third is underneath your gums.10
