Ideas to Celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day

Sep. 24th, 2022

Family Health and Fitness Day is celebrated on the last Saturday of September in the United States. Today is a day to celebrate fitness and encourage your loved ones to participate in physical activity.

Oftentimes, the health habits of family members can influence the rest of the household. Taking strides to lead a healthy lifestyle can positively influence others in your family to do the same.

To celebrate National Family Health and Fitness Day, here are fifteen ways you can get up and active with your family.

Go for a Bike Ride

A bike ride is a great way for the whole family to spend time together outdoors. You can take a ride through the neighborhood or a local park as a family. There also may be local bike trails where you can bike through different towns and parks.

Bowling

Bowling is a fun way for the family to get together for a little friendly competition. Many family-oriented bowling centers offer different game styles and family bowling events to help you meet people and bring your loved ones together.

Go to the Pool

Swimming at a local pool or community center is another great option to spend time with the family while staying active. Swimming is a low-impact exercise, which makes it easily accessible to people of all ages in your household. There are many fun activities you can do in the pool, from swim races to treasure hunts.

Play a Sport

Another great option for spending time together on Family Health and Fitness Day is by playing a sport. Football, volleyball, soccer, basketball and tennis are all sports where you can invite your family to form teams and play against one another.

Mini Golf

Mini golf is a fun way to get some fresh air and relax with your loved ones. There are many different mini golf courses, from ones that are friendly towards children to more experienced ones for adults looking for a challenge.

Go for Walk or Hike

A walk through the neighborhood can be a fun way to help your family get more active today. You can make a goal to complete a certain number of steps or say hello to a few neighbors along your route. If your children are older, consider going for a hike through the mountains or woods.

Visit the Local Playground

The playground is a great way for families with younger kids to get up and move. Playgrounds will often have monkey bars, rock climbing walls, swings, and slides to encourage children and their parents to get active. You can also invite a friend to bring their family to the park to make it an active day for multiple families.

Fitness Class

Some fitness and community centers will offer classes that the whole family can enjoy while working out together. Check your local fitness center for a fun family fitness event where you and your loved ones can get active as a group.

Canoeing/Kayaking

Canoeing/kayaking is a fun team activity where your family can go outside and enjoy exploring a local lake or river. Many parks allow you to rent out canoeing or kayaking equipment for your family. You can use this opportunity to bond while sightseeing nature as you travel through the water.

Hula Hooping

Hula hooping is an affordable activity, with hoops costing about $10 each. Hula hooping can burn about 165 calories for women and 200 calories for men in 30 minutes. Take your hula hoops out onto the sidewalk and get your family active today!

Play with the Dog

If your family has a dog, you can play with the dog to get up and move! Try throwing it a Frisbee or taking the dog out for a walk.

Plant a Garden

Gardening is a fun activity that both kids and adults can participate in as a group. You can plant seeds, water plants, and add mulch to the garden together. This can be a fun way to stay fit while growing your own flowers and vegetables to enjoy throughout the year.

Dance Party

A dance party is a great way to celebrate National Family Health and Fitness day! You can make a playlist combining everyone’s favorite songs and dance for a few hours. The best part is you can hold a dance party, rain or shine, as long as you have an open space for it.

Yoga

Yoga can be a fun way to relax and meditate alongside your loved ones. Yoga is a great way to relieve stress and help clear your mind to focus on what’s important. There are many different practices and styles of yoga, which can help your family find the right program for you.

Rollerblading

Rollerblading is a fun activity that can help your family move while building muscular strength and enhanced balance. You can rollerblade through the neighborhood or in a park with an area specifically designed to accommodate rollerblades. If your family is new to rollerblading, there are roller rinks that offer classes for first timers.
