Learning About the History of San Francisco
Each month, residents in participating communities will learn about a different port city or country through interactive activities, interesting facts, and delicious cuisine through the Port of Call Program. During the month of January, the Port of Call is to San Francisco, California! Learn more about the city of San Francisco, its history, attractions, cuisine, and all that makes San Francisco a great port city!
About San Francisco
San Francisco is a western American city located in northern California. The Pacific Ocean is located along the western coast of San Francisco; the San Francisco Bay is located along the eastern coast and the Golden Gate Strait is located along the northern coast.1 The first known settlers in San Francisco date back to 3000 BC. Europeans discovered San Francisco in the 16th century. In 1776, Spaniard Juan Bautiza de Anza took over the land. Throughout the early 1800s, a lot of Americans began to settle in San Francisco.2 In 1850, San Francisco became an American city as California became the 31st state.3
Today, nearly 874,000 people live in San Francisco. Around 56 percent of San Franciscans speak English only, while a little over 24 percent speak an Asian language, and 11.5 percent speak Spanish.4 San Francisco has an arid and comfortable summer and a wet winter. Temperatures range on average between 57 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.5
Attractions in San Francisco
San Francisco is a beautiful coastal town with a rich history and a variety of attractions to explore. One attraction you could visit is the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is located above the San Francisco Bay. You could take the Golden Gate Bay Cruise and take in the beautiful views of the bridge while learning about its history though the audio tour.6 You could also see and learn about the Golden Gate Bridge through free walking tours.7
Another historical site you could visit in San Francisco is Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz Island is a national park located in San Francisco just north of San Francisco’s mainland. Alcatraz Island was once a military prison and maximum-security federal penitentiary. During your visit, you will learn about the history of Alcatraz through an audio guided tour.8
Another attraction you could explore is Fisherman’s Wharf. Fisherman’s Wharf has a variety of attractions and restaurants to visit. If you enjoy museums, you could go to the Aquarium of the Bay, Cartoon Art Museum, and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! If you prefer sightseeing, you could take a tour of the city though San Francisco Jeep Tours, GoCar Tours, or Bay City Bike Rentals and Tours. After you are done sightseeing and visiting museums, you could grab a bite to eat at Pier Market Seafood Restaurant, Wipeout Bar & Grill, or Amici’s East Coat Pizzeria.9
If you would like to learn about San Francisco’s biggest landmarks and attractions, you could hop on BigBus San Francisco. While on the BigBus, you will see and learn about 15 different attractions from an expert tour guide. Some example of the attractions you will see are the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, and Pier 39. If one of the attractions piques your interest, you can hop off the bus and further explore. If you would like to see the city lights, you could do a BigBus Panoramic Night Tour.10
Food in San Francisco
San Francisco cuisine is mainly influenced by its Spanish settlers and indigenous tribes. A variety of fruits, vegetables, game, seafood, maize and chocolate were some of the foods these two cultures brought with them to San Francisco.11 Today, San Francisco is known for their seafood, Asian, and Mexican dishes.12
Here are some examples of traditional San Franciscan dishes:
Sourdough Bread. While sourdough bread was not invented in San Francisco, the taste of sourdough bread is different in San Francisco than in other places. Specifically, a strain of bacteria, only survivable in San Francisco’s environment, gives the sourdough bread a sourer yet delicious taste.13
Cioppino. Cioppino is a tomato-based seafood dish created by Italian immigrants. Cioppino consists of fennel, onions, garlic, tomatoes, red pepper flakes, herbs, and a lot of seafood. You can serve cioppino for dinner or any special occasions.14
Mission Burrito. A mission burrito is a larger burrito on a flour tortilla filled with Mexican rice, black beans, salsa, meat of choice, and sometimes cheese, crema, and guacamole. Once the burrito has all of its ingredients, it is wrapped in tinfoil.15
Ghiradelli. Ghiradelli Chocolate was invented in San Francisco in 1852. Today, Ghiradelli has a chocolate factory at Ghiradelli Square that you can visit. There is a variety of Ghiradelli chocolates you could have for dessert such as chocolate squares and chocolate bars.16

All activities are subject to change and these lists are not final. Here are some examples of the activities the affiliated communities plan to offer.
Falls Run
Falls Run plans on learning about the history of Ghiradelli by enjoying Ghiradelli hot chocolate while learning about the company’s legacy in San Francisco.
They also plan on celebrating San Francisco’s Chinatown by taking a virtual tour, playing Chinese bingo, and making dragons.
