Each month, the participating affiliated communities will host the monthly Port of Call program. The Port of Call program lets the residents experience the history, food, and culture of a different country or city. This month’s theme is Miami, Florida!

About Miami, Florida

Miami is a city in Florida that resides along the Atlantic Ocean. Miami is known as a major transportation and business hub, with many establishments such as resorts, restaurants, and historical buildings lining its streets. Originally founded in the 6th century by the Spaniards who settled here, Miami soon grew to become the great city it is today.1

Visit Local Beaches

Miami is known for its sunshine and oceanside views, with many families visiting Miami for its scenery. One of the most popular beaches is South Beach, which has often been featured on film and television shows. Some beaches such as Historic Virginia Key Beach and Crandon Park Beach are popular with families.2

Art Deco Historic District

The Art Deco Historic District is a famous architectural site with colorful designs and artistic flair! Built in the 1920s and 1930s, this historic district is located in Miami Beach. This district is home to over 800 buildings from different eras of Miami. If you’re looking for a way to view this district with a guide, there are walking tours available.3

Bayside Marketplace

Miami’s Bayside Marketplace is the perfect place to spend a night shopping and trying new foods! Plenty of stores, boutiques, and local restaurants line the streets of the Bayside Marketplace. There are also attractions such as the Skyview Miami, a Ferris wheel that gives you a glimpse of the overall marketplace.4

Museums

Miami has over 35 museums offering galleries on topics from science to art. If you’re looking for a great place to take your kids, the Miami Children’s Museum is dedicated to providing programs and classes to the youth. If you like architecture and history, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a representation of an Italian Villa you can tour and visit.5

The Food of Miami, Florida

The food in Miami, Florida is a melting pot inspired by Native American, Jewish, Haitian, Cuban, and other immigrant cultures. Over time, Miami has become a destination that has fused many traditions and cuisines, with many restaurants opening from those who decided to settle here.6

Miami is famous for Cuban sandwiches, which feature pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard as key ingredients for many recipes. Another popular Cuban classic is Ropa vieja, which is a flavorful beef stew that is soaked in a tomato-sauce base.7

Many restaurants in Miami serve fish-based dishes, with over a hundred establishments to choose from. If you are a seafood lover, Miami might be a great place for you to try a variety of seafood!

Activities for the Port of Call

Each month, the Life Enrichment Departments at the affiliated communities will offer fun and engaging activities centered around the history and culture of the monthly ort of Call city. All activities are subject to change and this list is not final. Here are some examples of the Miami-themed activities these participating affiliated communities plan to offer.

Autumn Care of Biscoe

Autumn Care of Biscoe plans on playing a beach volleyball game and having a key lime and limeade social.

Stonebridge Health & Rehabilitation Center

Stonebridge plans on playing trivia and enjoying Miami-themed tropical beverages.
