Sunshine and Seashells: Our Port of Call to Savannah

About Savannah
Savannah is a southern American city located in southeast Georgia. The Savannah River is located along Savannah’s northern coast.1
In February of 1733, General James Oglethorpe docked the Anne ship along the Savannah River and founded Georgia’s first city, Savannah.2 The 120 passengers on the ship disembarked and began settling in Savannah.3
Today, nearly 148,000 people live in Savannah. All Savannahians speak English as their main language, with 10 percent of households being bilingual.4 Savannah has a relatively warm climate. The temperatures in the winter range on average between 60 and 71 degrees, and 85 to 92 degrees in the summer.5
Attractions in Savannah
The city of Savannah is filled with beautiful architecture, scenery, and sites to explore. One way you could learn more about Savannah is through the Hop On/Hop Off Savannah sightseeing tour. During this 90-minute narrated tour, you will get to see over 100 points of interest, including the City Market and Lucas Theater. If you would like a scenic way to view the city, you could do a 2-day trolley tour around the streets.6
For ocean lovers, you could visit the Savannah Riverboat Narrated Habor Sightseeing Cruise. For one and a half hours, the captain of the ship will tell you fun facts and historical information about Savannah and the Savannah River. One historical landmark you will see and learn about is Old Fort Jackson, which is home to many historical military artifacts. If you get hungry or thirsty while on the tour, there are drinks and entrees available for purchase.7
Savannah’s City Market is a beautiful outdoor shopping area located just southwest of Savannah’s waterfront. The City Market has a variety of attractions, art galleries, shops, and restaurants to visit. For example, you could visit the Alix Baptiste Gallery and take in his beautiful acrylic paintings. You could also visit Trolley Stop Gifts and purchase Savannah-themed souvenirs for you and your family.8
Savannah Cuisine
Savannah cuisine is influenced by Native American and West African dishes. The Native Americans introduced Savannah settlers to corn, squash, palmetto plants, alligators, and oysters.9 West Africans brought over watermelon, sesame seeds, kale, and sweet potatoes. The Native American and West African influences are still a part of Savannah cuisine today.10
Here are some of Savannah’s most popular dishes:
- Shrimp and Grits: Shrimp and grits is a traditional breakfast dish in Savannah. It is recommended to use stone-ground grits and jumbo shrimp for this dish.11
- Southern Fried Chicken: Southern fried chicken is a staple dish. Fried chicken can be served at lunch or dinner. Typically, fried chicken is served with a vegetable and mashed potatoes.12
- Low Country Boil: Low country boil consists of de-veined shrimp, smoked sausage, red potatoes, corn on the cob, and baguettes cooked in a large pot. A low country boil can be served at parties and during dinnertime.13
- Pralines is a popular dessert in Savannah. They are a cluster of pecans dunked in brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cream.14
